Today, the heavy rainfall in Kolkata has waterlogged several areas, claiming four lives. According to Ei Samay reports, the tragedy has struck in Kalikapur, Gariahat, Beniapukur and Netaji Nagar, where victims were electrocuted due to live wires and submerged electric poles.
In one incident at Netaji Nagar, the cyclist lost balance on the submerged road and tried to hold onto an electric pole for support, which led him to instant electrocution and spot dead, Ei Samay reported.
Kolkata has not witnessed such heavy rainfall in recent years. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid flooded zones. The downpour has disrupted traffic and caused widespread distress in low-lying areas, where water has entered several houses. Railway and Metro services have been affected since Tuesday morning.
The intensity of the downpour was greater in Southern and eastern parts of the city. According to Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Garia Kamdahari has recorded a staggering 332 mm of rain in within just a few hours, Jodhpur Park at 285mm Kalighat at 280mm, Topsia at 275mm, and Ballygunge at 264mm. Meteorologists attribute the deluge due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, warning that more showers may follow.
The disaster comes just before Durga Puja, where most puja pandals are already in place, making it challenging for the organizers to protect the intricate decorations from damage after months of preparation.
