A low-pressure system is causing rainfall over South Bengal, while an intensified depression is located over Fulbani in southern Odisha, which is expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by Friday afternoon, likely to extract considerable moisture from the Bay of Bengal and hence cause scattered heavy rainfall over the region for the next 24 to 48 hours.
The impact of this low-pressure system had already triggered rainfall on Dashami. The Weather Office has indicated that similar conditions will persist on Friday, Ekadashi.
Alert for coastal areas
According to meteorological sources, coastal areas are at risk of extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Accompanying this precipitation, gusty winds are likely to sweep through the region. The low-pressure system is expected to cause turbulent sea conditions. In light of this, the Weather Office has issued an advisory, prohibiting fishermen from going into the sea.
Birbhum district has been placed under an alert for extremely heavy rainfall on Ekadashi. There is a high probability of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, in the two Medinipur districts, South 24 Parganas, and Jhargram. Additionally, Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Bardhaman, Bankura, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Purulia may experience heavy rainfall.
However, the Weather Office suggests that the intensity of rainfall might slightly diminish on Saturday. Coastal areas may experience gusty winds.
Tomorrow, on Dwadashi, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall. Several areas in South Bengal face the possibility of scattered thunderstorms with rain. Sunday will see the city hosting a carnival in celebration of Puja. Even on this day, all districts in South Bengal are expected to experience scattered thunderstorms with rain.
