When Kolkata is grappling with waterlogged streets, a mysterious body is found on a city street. Kolkata and its surrounding areas received very heavy overnight rain on Tuesday, 29 September, which inundated many areas.
Now, a video surfaced on social media showing a man, motionless in the grey floodwaters, lying on a submerged street. His bicycle floated eerily close by. However, it remains unclear whether the man was unconscious or dead.
The viral video also shows a few people wading through waist-deep water, trying to reach him. The water has already risen to the waist level of the people standing there. The video's caption alerts people to stay safe and try to avoid the waterlogged area.
Netizens chiming in with the viral video
One user on Facebook wrote, “Everyone just passing by taking videos, whereas no one is actually helping him.” Another one says, “the whole waterlogged situation is due to corporation’s ill management.”
One slammed the corportation, “A poor man’s life has been lost, and the blame lies with the negligence of the municipality. If drains were kept clean on time, so much water would not have accumulated. “
Interestingly, another user chimed in saying, “He has been rescued, and his cycle is now in the police station.”
Last night water entered many houses and residential complexes in the city as roads went underwater. The waterlogged situation is causing traffic chaos. Already train and metro transport system is disrupted, as the lines are submerged into water.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal is likely to cause heavy rain in several south Bengal districts, the city was preparing for more downpour.
The Garia Kamdahari received 332 mm in a few hours, followed by Jodhpur Park at 285 mm, Kalighat at 280 mm, Topsia at 275 mm, Ballygunge at 264 mm, while Thantania in north Kolkata received 195 mm of rain, according to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
