19 August,Tuesday: Jadavpur University alumnus Hindol Mazumdar was finally granted bail after 5 days of arrest. He was produced before the Alipore court on Monday,18th August, following the expiry of the tenure of three-day police custody. According to the news agency,PTI,the court granted the bail on the surety of 1,000 rupees despite Kolkata Police opposing his release, claiming it could "affect the smooth investigation."
The fact that Hindol Majumdar was granted bail four days after his detention sparked rumours and debates. Particularly considering that during the previous hearing, the police had opposed Hindol's bail, comparing his actions to those of Aftab Ansari, the mastermind who planned the American Center attack and detained from Delhi. Reacting to this comparison after securing bail, the researcher told reporters: “There can be only one answer to this,my name is Hindol Majumdar, and I am not a terrorist. Someone was telling me that I am also being compared him with Osama Bin Laden. I don’t know what to say. It is very unfortunate. I feel hurt. I feel sad to hear such things. There is nothing more to say.”
Mazumdar was accused of plotting an attack on West Bengal education minister Bratya Basu's convoy at Jadavpur University in March this year. He was detained from the Delhi airport based on WhatsApp messages allegedly linked to the incident, but as a matter of fact,he wasn’t present on the day the unfortunate incident took place in the university.
Hindol is a former student of pharmaceutical technology at Jadavpur University and has been pursuing a PhD in biomedicine and clinical sciences at Universidad de Granada in Spain for the past two years. He was scheduled to visit Calcutta after meeting his sister in Delhi and he was detained at Delhi airport.
