The Supreme Court collegium has recommended the transfer of Justice Atul Sreedharan from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Allahabad High Court, revising an earlier decision that had proposed moving him to Chhattisgarh. The change comes after the Central government sought a reconsideration of the August recommendation, prompting the collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, to hold a review meeting on October 14.
In a resolution published on the Supreme Court’s website, the collegium said, “The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on October 14, 2025, on reconsideration sought by the Government, resolved to recommend that Mr. Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge, High Court of Madhya Pradesh, be transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad instead of the High Court of Chhattisgarh.”
Centre’s reconsideration changes course
This is not the first time Justice Sreedharan’s posting has been revised. The collegium had, in August 2025, recommended his transfer to the Chhattisgarh High Court, months after he returned to Madhya Pradesh from Jammu and Kashmir. But the Centre’s reconsideration request has now shifted him to Allahabad instead.
Justice Sreedharan has seen several transfers in the recent years. He was moved from Madhya Pradesh to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in April 2023 which was a transfer he personally requested since his daughter had started practising law in Madhya Pradesh. He was brought back to his parent High Court in March 2025, only to find himself once again in line for a transfer and this time to Allahabad, following the government’s intervention.
A steady career across courts
Justice Sreedharan began his legal career in the year 1992, joining the chamber of Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium in Delhi, as he assisted him in several civil and criminal cases before the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. He later practised independently in Delhi till 2000, before shifting base to Indore in 2001, where he worked closely with Senior Advocate Satyendra Kumar Vyas.
Over the years, he served as Panel Advocate and Government Advocate for the State of Madhya Pradesh before the Indore Bench of the High Court. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on April 7, 2016, and later was confirmed as a Permanent Judge on March 17, 2018.
With this latest decision, the collegium has effectively brought closure to a series of transfers concerning Justice Sreedharan, whose move to Allahabad now awaits official notification from the Union Law Ministry.
