As the winter season approaches, the problem of cracked heels begins to set in for many. For some, the heels become painfully chapped which makes walking even more uncomfortable. The skin around the feet often turns dry and rough and if it is left untreated, the issue only worsens in the colder months. But if a salon pedicure isn’t an option for you then simple home remedies can work just as well for soft, healthy feet.

To prevent cracked heels, start with regular cleaning and moisturising. Apply a hydrating cream on your feet daily and exfoliate at least two to three times a week using a foot scrub. Another thing one needes to keep in mind is, instead of relying on store-bought scrubs, you can easily prepare an effective one at home with ingredients from your kitchen.

Make your own lemon-honey foot scrub

To make the scrub, mix together one cup of sugar, half a cup of coconut oil, two tablespoons of honey, and juice from half a lemon. Store this blend in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Honey helps in moisturising and hydrating the skin, while coconut oil locks in moisture. The combination of sugar and honey acts as a natural exfoliant, gently removing dead skin cells. Lemon juice, on the other hand, not only refreshes but also helps in eliminating odour from the feet.

How to use the scrub?

Soak your feet in a bucket of lukewarm water for about 10 to 15 minutes to soften the skin and make the exfoliation process easier. Then wash your feet with a mild body wash or shampoo. Apply the lemon-honey scrub and massage gently in circular motions. After that let it sit for around 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Pat dry and finish by applying a good moisturiser that suits your skin type.

Repeat this routine two to three times a week. Remember with consistent care, even the harshest winter chill won’t stand a chance against your soft, crack-free heels.
