Breakups, loss of a loved one, letting go of something very close to your heart, moving from an old home to a new one, losing a pet, or feelings of loneliness-all these can be triggers for depression. Such sadness settles deep inside the mind over time. As it advances, depression starts to take a toll not only on mental health but also on physical health. Sleep disturbances may begin, pressure on the heart increases, and other health issues might crop up. This is why it is necessary to treat depression. The challenge is that many people don't even realise that they are depressed. What we often dismiss as a temporary low mood, or a "bad day" may actually be depression. Here's how to recognise it:

Losing interest and the ability to enjoy things

Once enjoyable activities may suddenly seem pointless. Time with friends, listening to one's favourite music, or pursuing hobbies no longer excites you. This feeling of disconnection from everything that a person used to enjoy is often an early warning sign of depression.

Changes in sleeping patterns

Depression can disrupt the usual patterns of sleep. Some people sleep too much, and others cannot sleep enough. Even if you sleep a whole night, you can still wake up feeling heavy and lacking the motivation to start a new day. Persistent sleeping problems, either too little or too much, are a serious issue.

Changes in appetite and weight

Depression may make people lose their appetite or even not want their favourite food. Others turn to emotional eating, consuming much more than usual. Sudden weight gain or loss is a possible sign of depression. If you notice this happening to yourself or someone close, it's time to reach out and talk.

Negative thoughts and self-blame

During depression, feelings of guilt come up for no reason. The mind keeps pointing out that anything bad that happens is your fault. Such thinking can deepen feelings of hopelessness and chip away at self-confidence. If thoughts continue reappearing, it's important to speak with someone rather than bottle them up. Encourage friends or loved ones to open up if you notice these patterns in them.

Fatigue and difficulty concentrating

Symptoms may include feeling tired even after getting enough rest, not being able to focus on work, overreacting minor things, or taking extra time to make decisions. Memory problems and forgetfulness may manifest. When the mind aches, the body does too. Don’t ignore these signs, talk to someone you trust and seek professional help if needed.
