When hair turns grey at a young age, it feels like the sky is falling. Many people become depressed, thinking they are getting older. Some rush to salons to hide their grey hair, while others frequently dye their hair at home. Some even try home remedies to cover grey hair. However, knowing what actually lies behind the greying of hair will actually make you happy.

A recent study by the University of Tokyo found that grey hair is not an indication of aging, but rather can be considered part of the natural protective mechanism that prevents skin cancer. Surprised to hear this? Researchers say that experiments have been ongoing for a long time on how hair pigment cells work in cases of DNA-related problems and cellular damage. The research paper published in 'Nature Cell Biology' states that greying hair does not always indicate age or genes. Rather, to stop the growth of cancer cells, pigment production (natural hair colour) is deliberately stopped.

However, nutritionists say that the idea that hair turns grey only for this reason is not entirely correct. Initially, we think that hair starts turning white when melanin production in hair follicles decreases with age or due to genetic reasons. Besides this, mental stress, depression, and deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals in the body can also cause this problem. Thyroid hormone problems, excessive smoking, or the effects of ultraviolet rays can also cause hair to turn grey.
