The chill of winter has gripped the city. Along with it has come the double trouble of pollution and cold- and infection-related coughs. Some people are even struggling with COPD. All in all, it's pretty exhausting. Not just physically, but mentally too, you might be feeling a little drained. To break away from this, a change of scenery is necessary. But where to go? If you want to spend a couple of quiet days by a river in the hills, you could explore Bidyang Valley.

What's there?
Nature is uniquely lovely here. Hills surround the area, and the Relli River runs right through. If you walk a bit further ahead, there is a trek route leading to a crystal waterfall. The water spills down with wild force, and at the bottom, it has created a natural pool. You can go for a dip here in that waterfall. And if you would like to swim in the flowing waters of the Relli River, then you can do that too. There is a hanging bridge across the valley, across two hills precisely in the middle. You can cross it at any time of your liking as many times as you desire, without restriction. If you have more time, you can also see Mongpu, which houses a house with deep connections with Rabindranath Tagore.
How to go there?
One can take a train from Sealdah to New Jalpaiguri station and reserve a car from there to reach Kalimpong. From Kalimpong, Vidyang is only 17 kilometres away. Shared taxis are also available if one is on a shoestring budget. One may even fly into Bagdogra and hire a car from there to reach Vidyang.

Where to stay?
Homestays are your best option. A few families run small and medium-sized homestays along the Relli River, surrounded by the valley. However, finding a place without prior booking can be difficult. All expenses here cover food and lodging. You can manage with a budget of around ₹1,200–₹1,500 per person. Additional money for transportation and sightseeing is extra.
