You want to grow spinach in your balcony garden with your own hands, but have nothing at hand except a few pots. What do you need to know to grow greens on the balcony before winter?
Firstly, selecting the right size pot is essential for spinach cultivation. A 6-8 inch pot will suffice. You need to ensure there is a hole at the bottom of the pot.
Organic or compost-enriched soil is good for spinach. There is no need to use heavy garden soil. If you have heavy soil, it's better to dry the wet soil in the sun first to make it loose before planting seedlings.
Which variety of seedlings you buy is also important. If you want to enjoy your homegrown spinach before winter arrives, you can choose varieties like 'Space' or 'Bloomsdale'.
If you want to plant seeds, you need to know the proper method too. Seeds should be planted in such a way that half of it is inside the soil and the rest remains above the soil.
The seedlings should be kept in gentle morning sunlight. If they get at least 4-6 hours of sunlight, the spinach leaves will flourish. However, if they get harsh sunlight, the plants may die.
The soil should remain moist and damp. But you must be careful that water does not accumulate at the base of the plants. During cold weather, there is no need to water excessively.
You can provide shade overhead so that the seedlings don't get too much sunlight. Otherwise, you will have to change the pot's location daily.
Once the seedlings grow a bit bigger, homemade compost can be applied every two to three weeks. For quick results, never use chemical fertilizers.
