August 28, 2025:

In May 2025, a fatal fire accident at Rituraj Hotel forced the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to close down all restaurants and bars on the rooftop for a proper fire safety check. Following negotiations with the hospitality sector, the KMC has now permitted reopening with stringent terms. Half of their rooftops should remain open, exits should be clear, gas cylinders should be prohibited, CCTV should be installed, and fire audits should be conducted within three months or face permanent closure.
