Many devotees observe a nirjala upavas (waterless fast) during Lakshmi Puja, breaking it only after the rituals are complete. But after fasting all day, oily or spicy food can upset your stomach. A light, nutritious choice like oats khichdi helps restore energy without discomfort. Here’s how you can prepare it at home.
Ingredients
- Oats: 50 g
- Moong dal: 50 g
- Green peas: 50 g
- Onion: 1 (finely chopped)
- Carrot: 1 (finely chopped)
- Ghee: 2 tbsp
- Tomato: 1 (chopped)
- Ginger: 1 tsp
- Green chilies: 3–4
- Turmeric powder: 1 tsp
- Red chili powder: 1 tsp
- Asafoetida (Hing): ½ tsp
- Salt: to taste
- Cumin seeds: ½ tsp
Preparation
Start by heating a little ghee in your pressure cooker. Can you smell that rich aroma already? Toss in the cumin seeds and a pinch of hing, and let them crackle for a few seconds. Now, add your chopped onions, tomatoes, ginger, and green chilies; give everything a quick stir until the onions turn golden. Sprinkle in the turmeric and chili powder, letting the spices blend beautifully.
Next, it’s time to add the healthy oats, moong dal, and all those colorful veggies. Stir them gently so they soak up all the flavor. Add salt to taste and just enough water to cook. Close the lid, wait for one whistle, and that’s it! Your warm, comforting Oats Khichdi is ready to serve, perfect for breaking your fast with a nourishing, light meal.
