1948: World’s first internal pacemaker implanted

Arne Larsson was a 43-year-old man who became the first person to get an internal pacemaker. The device functioned for only a few hours. Larsson was alive till the age of 86 and passed away in 2001. This event was a head start for progress in life-saving heart-related technology.

1919: The first transcontinental air race

A total of sixty-three aircraft, including 15 from San Francisco and 48 from New York, took part in the world’s first transcontinental air race. Lieutenant Belvin Maynard tasted victory, completing the record-breaking 5,400-mile round-trip in a time period of little over three days. This race was the start of a new era in flying and its possibility of long-distance travel.

1912: First Balkan War begins

The first Balkan War, which would change southeastern Europe, began on this day. Montenegro declared war against the Ottoman Empire. The countries of Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia entered the battle, leading to the birth of the Balkan League.

1871: The great Chicago fire erupted

The Great Chicago Fire began from an ignition in a barn on October 8, 1971. The fire started spreading quickly. The fire lasted for two days, claiming the lives of over 300 people and causing extensive damage to properties across Chicago
