Didn’t manage a getaway during Durga Puja? If you’re craving a quiet, three-day retreat in the lap of nature surrounded by birdsong, rolling hills, and the sight of blackbucks grazing freely, you need to visit Bhetanai. The place is located in Odisha’s Ganjam district, and it might just be the place you’re looking for.
Located close to Gopalpur, this small village is best known for its thriving population of the endangered blackbuck or Krishnasar. Nearly two thousand of these graceful antelopes roam freely along the roads and meadows here, turning an ordinary drive into a surreal wildlife experience.

Where silence meets wilderness
Bhetanai is the kind of place that invites you to slow down. Set in the midst of serene countryside, it’s ideal for a long weekend away from city noise. If time permits, plan a short detour to the Chilika Lake region. A boat ride across its shimmering waters on a late autumn afternoon is the perfect way to unwind.
Bird lovers should also keep a day aside for Mangalajodi Bird Sanctuary which is a paradise for migratory species and butterflies. The region is also dotted with local gems like the Ganjam Fort, the ancient Kankana Devi Temple, and the lush Pakida Hills, whose green slopes will stay etched in memory long after you return.
How to reach?
The easiest way to get to Bhetanai is to take an early morning train from Kolkata to Behrampur. From there, hire a car or take a local bus as the village is roughly an hour’s drive away. Alternatively, you can reach via Balugaon, where car rentals are available. Those preferring a road trip can drive straight from Kolkata and if you are planning to do that, just start early and keep navigation on.

Where to stay?
Accommodation at Bhetanai itself is limited. A few nature camps have come up recently, though staying in tents is the only option. Families might find better comfort in Balugaon or Mangalajodi, both of which have modest yet comfortable hotels and eco-stays. Behrampur, too, offers several stay options ranging from budget to mid-range, ideal for those planning to explore nearby attractions.
For travellers weary of pollution and noise, Bhetanai offers a breath of clean air, open skies, and the rare sight of blackbucks sprinting freely which is a reminder that nature still thrives quietly, if only we pause long enough to notice.
