Another hidden gem of North Bengal is Chhota Pubong in Nijhumpur. While yet to gain widespread recognition, Chota Pubong stands as an exquisite retreat for those seeking to lose themselves in nature. The journey begins on the left of Ghum, following the road to Sukhiapokhri. The path winds through dense forests, with mountains rising on one side and pine woods on the other, eventually leading to Pubong.
On both sides of the forested road lie small villages inhabited by Tamang, Limbu, and Chettri tribes. The route alternates between ascents and descents, while the sky shifts from azure to a shroud of clouds and mist. One must press on, piercing through the misty veil. A collage of hill villages unfolds along the roadside - lesser-known hamlets like Chhetri Gaon, Bangar Gaon, Limbu Gaon, Tamang Gaon, and Alubari. Sunlight barely penetrates this jungle path; instead, birdsong fills the air, and verdant vistas dominate the view. Amidst this, you'll arrive at Chota Pubong.
Surrounded by mountains, a crimson bungalow stands out amidst the greenery. Built in 1921 by Mr. Campbell, locals know it as the Saheb Kuthi. A verdant, velvety meadow stretches before the bungalow, descending into vast tea gardens. From above, one can observe the bustling tea garden workers. Occasionally, mist envelops the entire plantation, only to reveal glimpses of distant villages as it clears. At an elevation of 5,820 feet, the Pubong tea estate and the colonial bungalow are, in a word, sublime.
Here, you can witness mesmerizing sunsets. As the sun dips behind the mountain slopes, its final rays suffuse the surroundings. Birds commence their homeward journey, cleaving the azure sky. As evening descends, a chilly breeze takes hold. On a full moon night, the experience is nothing short of magical. On clear nights, Chota Pubong's sky becomes a tapestry of stars.
The sunrise here is equally memorable. The sun peeks through gaps in the neatly arranged pine and oak trees along the precipice. After basking in the gentle mountain sunshine and enjoying breakfast, set out to explore. The tea factory lies 3 kilometers from the bungalow - worth a visit if you're inclined. Nearby, you'll find Khalmakha village and a picturesque church. Additionally, take a leisurely stroll through the local tea gardens. Time spent amid such greenery is sure to be delightful.
Chota Pubong is approximately 75 kilometers from New Jalpaiguri. Passing by Ghum station, take the Sukhiapokhri road to reach Pubong Gate. From there, a 6-kilometer descent brings you to Chota Pubong. For accommodation, the Pubong Tea Estate Resort is available, along with homestay options.
