Durga Puja 2025: Date, ritual time, and everything you need to know

Durga Puja 2025 will take place from September 28 to October 2, celebrating good's triumph over evil, particularly among the Bengali community.

Durga Puja, also called Sharadiya Durgotsava, is a significant Hindu festival mostly observed by the Bengali community, mainly in West Bengal and scatteredly a lot of places in India. The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil. With the same morale, in the Northern part of India, people observe the nine-day-long Navratri celebration in the same timeline as Durga Puja. People observe fast and worship nine forms of Goddess Durga each day.

Durga Puja 2025 days

Durga Puja is usually observed in September or October, during the Hindu lunar calendar month of Ashwin, from the sixth to the tenth day of the bright lunar fortnight. The most important days of Durga Puja are- Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, and Dashami.

The festivities start with Bodhon on Shashthi. ‘Ghatasthapana’ or ‘Agomon’ rituals start on Shashthi, ‘Nabapatrika’ ritual takes place on Saptami, on which Ashtami, Goddess Durga defeated the demon Mahishashur, so people worship her on that day with Pushpanjali. After that, Sandhi Puja takes place on Navami, and Doshomi is secured as the last day for immersion.

Durga Puja dates

According to the Hindu Lunar calendar, the grand Durga Puja will commence on September 28, 2025, as the holy sixth day known as ‘Shashthi’ by the Hindu Lunar calendar. Important rituals and celebrations will wrap up on October 2, 2025, the tenth day with ‘Durga Bisarjan’, the idol’s immersion.

Day 2 of Durga Puja. Saptami. Monday, September 29, 2025 (Navapatrika Puja time: 05:49 AM)

Durga Puja Day 3: Ashtami, Tuesday, September 30th, 2025 (Mahashtami Puja starts at 4:31 PM on September 29 and ends at 6:06 PM on the very next day).

Durga Puja Day 4: Nabami Wednesday, October 1st, 2025 (Maha Navami Puja begins at 6:06 PM on September 30 and continues till 7:01 PM the next day). Durga Puja Day 5: Dashami Thursday, October 2nd, 2025 (Durga Bisarjan time is from morning 6:15 to morning 8:37).

Folklore states that Mahishasura was a demon who was granted the ability to resist defeat by either a god or a human by Lord Brahma. As a result, he gained strength and greatly offended the gods of heaven.
