England’s ODI team struggles continue to show up in Hamilton as New Zealand sealed the series with a dominant all-round display. Jofra Archer had a great return to international cricket that briefly gave hope to England. The top order collapsed yet again to hand the hosts an easy chase.

England start well but implode with the bat

The second ODI in Hamilton witnessed England winning the toss and choosing to bat first. England’s early optimism was crushed quickly. Jofra Archer made a formidable return from injury with a bowling figure of 3-23. The three wickets included Will Young, Rachin Ravindra and Michael Bracewell. Archer’s pace and bounce gave hope to the England fans, but that hope was for a very short time, as the British top order crumbled for just 175 runs in 36 overs.

Joe Root, Jos Buttler and Harry Brook failed to fire, putting pressure on the lower order. Jamie Overton’s 42 from 28 was the standout in the batting list. England’s batting vulnerabilities away from home remain stark and problematic.

New Zealand clinical in chase and secure the series

New Zealand played slowly and confidently while chasing the modest total. Rachin Ravindra’s 54 and Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 56 helped anchor the pursuit. Mitchell Santner added crucial 34-odd runs. England’s bowling attack flopped despite Archer’s comeback. Blair Tickner’s 4-34 and smart fielding contributed to the visitors’ downfall. New Zealand wrapped up the win with more than 100 balls to spare. This result demonstrated control and temperament. The series now stands at 2-0 with the Black Caps underlining their status as a tough ODI side on home turf.

What could have been a statement win for England exposed deeper cracks instead. Archer’s return was promising, but cricket is a team sport. One hot spell from a certain player can never mask the team’s problems. New Zealand’s composed win exhibits depth, balance and home advantage. The third ODI comes forward as little more than formality. A long reflection is overdue for England before their next outing.
