Rishabh Pant is set to return to competitive cricket later this month and may likely feature for Delhi in the second round of the Ranji Trophy starting October 25, according to an ESPNCricinfo report. The move is seen as part of his gradual return to international cricket, particularly with India’s upcoming two-Test series against South Africa in November.
Pant is currently in the final stages of his rehabilitation and is expected to undergo a fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru this week. According to the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), he remains doubtful for Delhi’s opening game against Hyderabad on October 15, according to an ANI report.
Focus on leadership and comeback form
Pant sustained a foot injury during the Manchester Test against England earlier this year after being struck by a delivery from Chris Woakes. Despite the pain, he went on to score a crucial half-century, helping India draw the match and level the series.
Known for his aggressive batting and match-winning ability, Pant was India’s sixth-highest scorer in that series with 479 runs in four Tests. If cleared to play, he is also likely to lead Delhi in the Ranji campaign, currently captained by Ayush Badoni.
Pant’s return will be closely watched as India looks to build a solid squad for the South Africa series and beyond.
