Mohammad Shami had not played a single international match since the final of the Champions Trophy. After a great year in 2023, he suffered an early injury in 2024, which made Shami unavailable for selection for months. He was also not able to play the IPL 2024 season. However, the veteran Indian swing bowler made a domestic comeback for a Duleep Trophy match and played a few Ranji Trophy matches before his comeback in the Champions Trophy. ‘
Disappointing return in International Cricket
Following the injury, Shami’s pace looked off, and he had to work to find his rhythm. He played the IPL 2025 season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchise bought the experienced fast bowler for 10 crore rupees, however, he also failed to deliver there. He only played 9 matches in IPL 2025 and failed to leave his footmark in the ground.
His disappointing return in International cricket ultimately cost him his place in the Indian team, and he was excluded from Shubman Gill’s first captaincy assignment. During the tour of England, fans missed Shami and raised questions about his exclusion from the squad.
Shami spoke about his omission from the Australia Tour
The BCCI selectors again overlooked him for the Australia series. Following this, Shami finally opens up about his omission on his YouTube channel.
"There have been several rumors and memes. People want to know my thoughts on the non-selection for the Australia series. I'll just state that getting selected is up to the selection committee, coach, and captain. If they believe I should be there, they will choose me; if they believe more time is required, it is entirely up to them. "I'm ready and practicing," Shami stated on his YouTube channel.
Commenting on his fitness, he said, "My fitness is also good. I will try to do better because when you are away from the ground, you need to remain motivated. I played in the Duleep Trophy. I felt very comfortable, my rhythm was good, and I bowled around 35 overs. There are no issues with my fitness."
"There have been a lot of memes about this question." I believe there should be no objection. This is the decision of the BCCI, selectors, and coaches. Shubman captained India in England and currently leads the Gujarat Titans. So he has experience. Someone had to take on this duty, and the BCCI chose Shubman Gill for it; therefore, we should accept it," Shami added about the Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill conflict.
