At just 15 years old and yet to play international cricket, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has created a social media sensation like few others in the game.

What was supposed to be a tough test in the IPL after last year’s explosive 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals turned out to be his stepping stone to an India call-up. The teenager spent most of the year playing U-19 cricket, with only a handful of domestic appearances, including a blistering 36-ball List A century and a 67-ball 93 in the Ranji Trophy.

Vaibhav's feature in the Indian squad

Vaibhav's sensational IPL 2026 campaign of 776 runs at a blistering strike rate of 237.3, a record 72 sixes, and five individual awards left the selectors with no choice. Last Saturday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia named the 15-year-old in India’s squads for the Ireland and England tours as well as the Asian Games.

The upcoming England tour will test the young sensation in vastly different conditions, but even before boarding the flight, Sooryavanshi has already sparked a huge media frenzy ahead of the five-match T20I series.

Vaibhav's talent sparks English media

During a Sky Sports discussion at Lord’s, former England captain Mike Atherton held up a Daily Mail article headlined: “India’s teen sensation Sooryavanshi is this summer’s MUST-WATCH SHOW.”

Atherton said, “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi — this year’s must-watch. He’s already in the India T20I squad, and there’s a massive media frenzy around this kid.”

Journalist Elizabeth Ammon agreed, noting the ECB would be thrilled for ticket sales. “What’s extraordinary is how he takes on the world’s best bowlers from the very first ball,” she said, referencing comments from players like Liam Livingstone and Pat Cummins.

Former England batter Mark Butcher was left stunned by the teenager’s record 72 sixes: “You need intent and eyes like a hawk. A strike rate like that over a whole tournament? Nuts!”

Atherton made a banter while concluding, said,“Perhaps we would have loved to see Sooryavanshi bat on this Lord’s surface. Good luck smacking a few sixes.”

Sooryavanshi is set to feature in the India 'A' ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka, followed by a two-match T20I series in Ireland later this month, ahead of the T20I series against England which is set to commence from July 1.
