'You lifted a nation’s spirit': India’s political leaders celebrate Women’s World Cup win with pride

Leaders from across the political spectrum hailed India’s historic ICC Women’s World Cup win, calling it a “watershed moment” that redefined pride, power, and women’s cricket in India.

The Indian women's cricket team made history on Sunday night at Navi Mumbai's D.Y. Patil Stadium that will be remembered for years to come. Messages showcasing the pride, happiness, and admiration poured in from all over the nation as the Women in Blue defeated South Africa by 52 runs to win their first ICC Women's World Cup trophy. Political party leaders also celebrated the victory as a celebration of the country's daughters proved to be turning point for Indian sport.

President Droupadi Murmu led the nation’s praise, calling it a “watershed moment” for women’s cricket.

“My heartiest congratulations to each and every member of the Indian women cricket team on winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025! They have created history by winning it for the first time. They have been playing well and today they got the result befitting their talent and performance. This watershed moment will take women cricket to still higher performances. I admire the way the girls have done India proud,” she wrote on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a spectacular win, praising the team’s poise and teamwork.

“Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports,” he said in a post on X.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the victory as a “crowning moment” for the nation.

“Hats off to the world champion Team India. Your stellar cricketing skills paved the path of inspiration for millions of girls,” he wrote.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya lauded the achievement as iconic, posting,

“History scripted! What an iconic performance by our Women in Blue. 140 crore Indians are cherishing this proud moment. Congratulations, World Champions! #INDWvsSAW #WomensWorldCup2025.”

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi echoed the nation’s emotion, calling it “a moment of pride.”

“Our Women in Blue have made history and touched a billion hearts. Your courage, grit, and grace have brought glory to India and inspired countless young girls to dream fearlessly. You didn’t just lift a trophy, you lifted a nation’s spirit. Jai Hind!”, he posted on X.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan joined in the chorus of applause, he posted a video of him watching the match and celebrating the win. He wrote,

“Our daughters are champions! The daughters have given the entire country that moment of joy and pride which will be remembered for years to come. A proud moment for the country.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla saluted the team’s courage and composure. He wrote,

“Congratulations to Team India on clinching the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025! What a display of courage, skill, and belief. You’ve not just won a trophy, you’ve won hearts across the nation. Every Indian is proud of you! ‘Saare Jahan se accha Hindustan humaara’.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called it a “historic victory.”

“Hearty congratulations to the world champion Indian women’s cricket team! Heartfelt congratulations to the countrymen! You all are the pride of the country. Bharat Mata ki Jai.”

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the daughters have hoisted India's flag high. He wrote,

“Congratulations and heartfelt salutations to the players of @BCCIWomen who have brought glory to Mother India by clinching the ICC Women's World Cup-2025 in India's name. This victory is a new flight of the feminine power of 'New India'. Jai Ho.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee celebrated the team’s spirit and excellence. She posted on her X saying,

“You have proved that you are a world-class team at the apex level and you gave us some absolutely brilliant moments,” she said, calling the players “our heroes” and “an inspiration for generations of young girls.”

A win that goes beyond the game

Sunday night was about more than just cricket. It was about representation of the strength women have inside them along with immense courage, and steady belief. The victory demonstrated how far Indian women's cricket has come from just being an afterthought to becoming the pride of a billion hearts throughout the nation. For the first time, the entire nation spoke in unison with eyes brimming with tears of joy, hearts swelling with pride, inspired by its daughters in blue.
