Italy failed to qualify for two consecutive FIFA World Cups in 2018 and 2022—an outcome football fans never imagined for a four-time world champion. For Italian football, which seems to be gradually hitting rock bottom, the 2026 World Cup has become essential for a turnaround. But the road to qualifying has now become more complicated for them. Norway’s path to the World Cup has also become tense.

In yesterday’s European round of World Cup qualifying matches, Norway defeated Estonia 4-1. Haaland and Sorloth scored two goals each. With this win, Norway stayed firmly at the top of Group I. They have won all seven matches and are on 21 points. Italy sits in second place with six wins from seven matches and 18 points. Even if Italy wins the remaining matches and reaches 21 points, the head-to-head record and goal difference will come into play—both favouring Norway.

A total of 54 teams (excluding Russia) are competing in the European phase of World Cup qualification, divided into 12 groups. The group winners will directly qualify for the World Cup, while the 12 runners-up will move to the play-offs. They will be joined by four UEFA Nations League group winners who failed to finish in the top two of their qualification groups. These 16 teams will fight for the final four European spots.

This is where Italy’s challenge becomes severe. France and England have already qualified as group toppers. Although Norway’s qualification is not officially sealed, it is practically assured. With Italy stuck in second place behind Norway, they will be forced into the play-offs, where competition will be intense and unpredictable.

While Italy’s World Cup hopes grow increasingly uncertain, Norway is marching toward the tournament, and for the first time, Erling Haaland will feature on football’s biggest stage—a welcome development for the global game.
