Elon Musk has finally cleared the air about one of his most memorable internet moments, the day he walked into Twitter headquarters carrying a white porcelain sink.

Back in October 2022, a day before his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter (now X) was finalised, Musk posted a clip of himself strolling into the San Francisco office holding a sink, captioned with the now-famous pun: “Entering Twitter HQ — let that sink in!”

The video went viral, clocking over a million likes and hundreds of thousands of reposts, instantly becoming a meme. But according to Musk, the quirky stunt almost didn’t happen because finding a sink proved to be oddly complicated.

The pun that almost didn’t happen

Speaking on the All-In podcast on Friday, Musk recalled that his security team had trouble buying one.

“The store was confused because my security team was asking for any kind of sink,” Musk said. “Normally, people want a specific type that fits their plumbing. They were asking, ‘What kind of faucets do you want?’ and we said, ‘No, I just want a sink.’”

The billionaire laughed as he explained how the store clerks hesitated to sell it to them, thinking there must be a mistake.

“They were almost not letting us buy the sink because they thought maybe we’d get the wrong one,” Musk added. “It’s just rare that somebody wants a sink for sink’s sake.”

Since the 2022 takeover, Musk has overhauled the platform, cutting jobs, changing policies, and eventually renaming Twitter to X. The platform has since become intertwined with his AI venture, xAI, which he announced had formally acquired X earlier this year.

“xAI and X’s futures are intertwined,” Musk wrote in March. “This combination will unlock immense potential by blending xAI’s advanced AI capability and expertise with X’s massive reach.”

The merger also brought Grok, xAI’s generative chatbot, directly into X and Tesla systems. While Musk has touted it as a rival to ChatGPT, Grok briefly courted controversy earlier this year after sharing antisemitic posts which was an incident for which xAI later apologised.

As for the sink? It remains a lasting symbol of Musk’s unpredictable humour with a mix of dad jokes, chaos, and calculated spectacle that continues to define his every move online.
