OpenAI is giving Indian users a major boost. Beginning from November 4, the company will make ChatGPT Go, its paid mid-tier plan powered by GPT-5 available free for one year across India. The rollout coincides with OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, where company leaders, developers, and policymakers will meet to discuss the country’s growing influence in artificial intelligence.

OpenAI expands India focus

ChatGPT Go was introduced in India in August as a subscription plan designed for students, professionals, and creators who need more power and faster access than the free version offers. The plan includes higher daily usage limits, quicker responses, image generation, multiple file uploads, and longer conversation memory.

Nick Turley, vice president and head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, said the enthusiasm from Indian users has been “remarkable.” He added, “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people experience and benefit from advanced tools.”

Why this matters?

After the United States, India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market. The company says the number of paying users in India has more than doubled within a month of ChatGPT Go’s launch. This free access reflects OpenAI’s long-term commitment to India and aligns with the government’s IndiaAI Mission to promote responsible and inclusive use of emerging technology.

The offer also extends to existing ChatGPT Go subscribers, who will automatically receive the one-year free plan.

What will the users get from November 4?

All users in India will be upgraded automatically to ChatGPT Go starting November 4. The plan will include:

Higher message limits and faster responses

Multi-file uploads for assignments or reports

Image generation tools

Extended memory for longer conversations

Students who are preparing for exams, entrepreneurs drafting business proposals, and professionals who are creating reports will now have access to premium features without paying subscription fees.

OpenAI plans to open offices in Bengaluru and New Delhi, emphasising India’s importance to its global strategy. Several other global tech firms are also expanding in the country, viewing it as both a large user base and a key centre for AI development and policy.

The DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru will include discussions on AI in education, governance and startups. With this move, OpenAI aims to show how accessible technology can support creativity, productivity, and learning across India.
