WhatsApp is working on a new security feature called “Strict Account Settings” to protect users who are at high risk of targeted cyberattacks. The new “lockdown-style” mode was recently discovered in the code of new beta versions for both Android and iOS devices, which appears under Privacy > Advances in the beta version of the app, according to WABetaInfo.
It is not something designed for the average user; it is a feature being built especially for those who may be the target of some sophisticated hackers, due to their job profile, which includes journalists, human rights activists, and government officials.

What does 'Strict Account Settings' do?
Instead of making a user, finding, and changing different security settings, this new feature works as a single switch; when a user turns on “Strict Account Settings,” WhatsApp will automatically apply a bundle of its most secure and restrictive settings at once. Enabling this mode would turn on several major protections, including:
Blocking unknown media: WhatsApp will automatically restrain photos, videos, and files sent from unknown numbers or numbers which are not in the contact list.
Hiding location (IP address): All calls made on the app would be routed through WhatsApp’s servers. This would hide the user’s direct IP address, making it difficult for a hacker to find the physical location.
Stopping unknown callers: Calls (voice or video) from numbers not in the contact list will automatically be silenced.
Disabling link previews: The application would stop generating web link previews sent in chats, which would prevent the user from getting connected to a potentially malicious website.
Locking the profile: It automatically restricts personal information, like the profile picture, status, and last seen time, so that only saved contacts can see it.
Security over convenience
WhatsApp has also indicated that enabling this mode could “reduce the quality of your messaging experience,” with various side effects, such as those affecting call quality.
However, this feature is introduced for a certain category of users, aiming to maximise security over convenience for those who need it the most.
