World Development Information Day is celebrated as a reminder that information is not only power, but also the key to progress. The day, which is celebrated globally every October 24, seeks not only to inform people about development challenges but also to encourage the sharing of reliable and easily accessible information that will, in turn, inspire the global collective action.

From the start of a global observance

The United Nations General Assembly declared October 22 as World Development Information Day for the first time in 1972. The day is celebrated to emphasise development issues and instil international collaboration. This concept emerged during a period when decolonisation and rapid technological changes were drastically altering global developments. Developing countries were not only looking for financial aid but also for better sources of knowledge, technology, and the proper channels to make their voices heard globally.

The day was thought of as a connecting link between governments, international organisations, and the public. It proposed that modern communication technologies should be used to inform about economic and social issues, among them poverty, education, health, and environmental sustainability.

Data is the developer's main engine

A major developmental step was in 2025, and the world is still on the edge of change, this time for the better. The world will have the option to take the road of digital innovation or the path of issues like misinformation, inequality, and data privacy. If responsibly used, information can facilitate the process of growth that is inclusive and lead to the empowerment of local communities and the realisation of better policymaking through the availability of data.

AI-powered data mapping in the rural healthcare system and digital financial literacy are just two examples of developmental activities. The UN, in its initiatives, still insists that the social developmental goals cannot be realised without open data-sharing, collaboration, and the engagement of the global community through informed participation.

The World Development Information Day 2025 has challenged us to change our way of sharing, accessing and using information. It is not only an awareness issue but an issue of accountability and a warning of the need for collective progress. As global challenges become more and more complex, the right information will still remain in the hands of mankind as the strongest tools for fair and sustainable development.
