A video that has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter) shows angry factory workers hurling unopened soan papdi boxes at the company's gate. The video was allegedly shot at a factory in Sonipat, Haryana. The video caption says, “This time, a factory gave its workers a box of sohan papdi instead of a bonus for Diwali. In protest, the workers left all the boxes right at the factory gate.”

Why are the workers throwing Soan Papdi?

The clip was apparently aired on a news channel, and then the Twitter account posted the video, which went viral.

In the video, the anchor explains that workers had been promised a bonus on Diwali, but a few days before Diwali, instead of receiving a cash bonus or even gift cards, they were given boxes of soan papdi. Factory workers in Ganaur, Sonipat, who were upset that their employers were not fulfilling their promises, protested by throwing soan papdi boxes.

Internet divided over the protest

The video sparked a debate on social media. While some criticised the factory for not keeping its promise, others thought that workers should not have thrown the sweets on the ground.

One user wrote on X on that thread, “Ungrateful employees....... I have faced a similar situation when my business was down and couldn't afford it.”

“Bonus is a choice of the company, not a mandatory rule to be followed. Employees get a salary, promotions and allowances sometimes. Why such disrespect? A sweet is a sweet.. “Another question.

Another commented, “They are lucky even to get a sonapapdi box...we just get ..best wishes…” One user replied on that thread, “I was in one of India’s well-known IT companies 20 years back. And they offered on Diwali to donate 500rs to charity from our salary.”

Another user wrote, “There's only one day when employees wait for gifts. Such miserliness should not be done.”

Why is soan papdi a negligent gift nowadays?

In India, soan papdi is one of the most popular candies given as gifts, particularly during the holidays. It does, however, unfairly have a reputation as a less-than-ideal gift choice. Lazy or last-minute gifting has come to be linked with the flaky Indian dessert. However, the surge of soan papdi memes in recent years has added to its perceived unpopularity.
