The Cannes Film Festival officially concluded with Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu winning the prestigious Palme d’Or for his film Fjord. The announcement became one of the biggest highlights of the closing ceremony as filmmakers, actors, and cinema lovers from around the world gathered to celebrate some of the year’s most acclaimed films.

More about ‘Fjord’

According to reports of Hindustan Times, Fjord received an overwhelmingly positive response during its premiere at Cannes earlier this week. The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve and explores themes of migration, family tensions, loneliness, and emotional conflict set in a remote Norwegian village. Critics praised the film for its emotional storytelling, haunting visuals, and layered performances, with several reports stating that it received one of the longest standing ovations at the festival this year.

This marks Cristian Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or victory after his acclaimed 2007 film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days won the same honour nearly two decades ago. International critics described Fjord as one of the strongest films in competition this year because of its human storytelling and realistic portrayal of cultural isolation and identity struggles.

Jury praises emotional storytelling

Reports of Hindustan Times, also suggested that the Cannes jury, led by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, appreciated the film’s emotional depth and universal themes. During his acceptance speech, Mungiu reportedly thanked his cast, crew, and audiences worldwide for continuing to support independent cinema and meaningful storytelling.

The Grand Prix, which is considered the second-highest award at Cannes, was awarded to Minotaur directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. The film reportedly impressed audiences with its dark psychological themes, intense performances, and visually striking cinematography. Many critics called it one of the boldest films screened at the festival this year.

Major acting winners at Cannes

Another major winner of the evening was The Dreamed Adventure, which secured the Jury Prize. The award further reflected the festival’s focus on globally diverse and emotionally driven storytelling.

The acting categories also became one of the most talked-about moments of the night after the jury decided to share both the Best Actor and Best Actress awards between multiple performers. Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto jointly won the Best Actress award for their performances in All of a Sudden. Their performances were widely praised for emotional intensity and screen presence throughout the festival.

Meanwhile, the Best Actor award was jointly awarded to Valentin Campagne and Emmanuel Macchia for their performances in Coward. Critics described their performances as raw, emotional, and among the strongest male performances seen at Cannes this year.

Cannes continues to dominate global attention

Apart from the awards, the Cannes Film Festival also remained one of the biggest talking points online due to celebrity appearances, fashion moments, and red carpet glamour. Indian celebrities including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Alia Bhatt generated massive buzz throughout the festival with their appearances and interviews.
