21 September, Sunday: Britain, Canada and Australia all issued formal recognition of Palestine. According to a report by The Guardian, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the move is meant to revive the hope of peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined in, saying recognition aligns with Australia’s long-standing support for a two-state future. Canada’s Mark Carney, meanwhile, said recognising Palestine offers partnership in building a peaceful future, for Palestine and Israel. These declarations were made ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. All three governments stressed that Hamas must play no part in any future Palestinian state.

Reactions by global leaders

Palestinian leaders welcomed the recognition as meaningful progress toward full sovereignty. However, Israel condemned the move, calling it a reward for militant actions and warning of diplomatic fallout. The United States also expressed opposition, saying recognition at this stage is premature. While largely symbolic in legal terms, recognition shifts international momentum.

As per the Guardian, It may open avenues for treaties, diplomatic missions, and greater international pressure for peace. With this came the call for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages held since the 2023 conflict. As per reports, the move could further isolate Israel diplomatically, especially among its traditional allies.

Some critics argue that recognition without corresponding changes on the ground may do little to ease suffering.
