Earlier this year, a $100,000 fee was proposed for H-1B visa applications. Amongst all other professionals, physicians may get to avail an exemption from this fee. According to a Bloomberg report, the Trump administration is considering such a move.
Professionals from India and China constitute the majority of H-1B visa applicants. Trump's new policy has left applicants worried. The administration is tightening restrictions on certain non-immigrant workers.
H-1B visas are crucial for American hospitals. Many medical facilities rely heavily on foreign doctors and medical residents, particularly in rural areas.
Following the H-1B visa policy changes, hospitals and health organizations have expressed concern. They fear a shortage of physicians if substantial application fees are imposed. Currently, about 76 million Americans live in remote areas with insufficient primary care physicians.
According to federal data, top institutions such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital are major sponsors of H-1B visas. Mayo Clinic alone has over 300 approved visas. This additional fee would mean millions of dollars in extra costs for these institutions.
The Trump administration has clarified that the $100,000 fee will only apply to new H-1B applications submitted from September 21. Those who applied earlier will not be required to pay the fee. The fee is not an annual charge but a one-time payment
According to 2024 statistics, 71% of H-1B visa holders are Indian.
