Job promise via phone ends in sexual assault, multi-lakh fraud case

A housewife was allegedly lured by a man over the phone with a fake job offer, then repeatedly raped and extorted of several lakhs.

A young man has been arrested on charges of repeatedly raping a woman and extorting several lakh rupees under the pretext of offering her a job after initially contacting her over the phone. Based on a complaint from a housewife in the Baduria police station area, Swarupnagar police launched an investigation and arrested the accused on Wednesday night. The accused has been identified as Uttam Biswas, a resident of Tetuliya Khaldhar. When produced before the Basirhat Sub-divisional Court on Thursday, the judge ordered a three-day police remand for the accused.

The housewife filled a written complaint at Swarupnagar police station, alleging that the accused first established contact with her over the phone, then lured her with promises of employment, led to the extortion of lakhs of rupees. She further accused the man of forcibly engaging in physical relations multiple times under the pretext of securing her a job. Acting on the complaint, Swarupnagar police initiated an investigation. The young man was arrested on Wednesday night from an area adjacent to Tetuliya bus stand. On the same day, the victimized woman was brought to the Basirhat Sub-divisional Court for a medical examination and to record her confidential statement.
