Clouds hover over Kolkata, but where’s the rain? IMD hints at a twist this week

Clouds linger over Kolkata with rising humidity, but rain stays away for now; IMD hints at a weather shift later this week that could finally bring much-needed relief to the city.

The sky has remained overcast in Kolkata since Sunday morning, leaving residents wondering whether the holiday mood will bring rain. However, the weather department has not yet offered any immediate relief for people in South Bengal.

According to the forecast, hot and uncomfortable conditions will persist until May 26. A shift in the weather is expected from May 27 onward. Temperatures across South Bengal may drop by around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius next week.

Will it rain in Kolkata today?

Despite cloudy skies throughout Sunday, the city continues to experience humid and uncomfortable heat. The weather office has indicated a strong possibility of thunderstorms with rain in Kolkata and nearby areas during the coming week.

On Sunday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 29.9C, which is 3.0C above normal, and a maximum temperature of 35.6C, slightly above the seasonal average by 0.2C.

Weather in South Bengal

A noticeable change in the weather is likely from Wednesday, May 27. Thunderstorms accompanied by rain may occur across most districts of South Bengal. Kolkata and adjoining areas are expected to receive thunderstorm activity on Thursday and Friday.

Until then, uncomfortable heat will continue. Districts such as Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, and West Burdwan may experience a further temperature rise.

Weather in North Bengal

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue in North Bengal for now. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on Sunday. Alerts for heavy rain have also been issued for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur.

On Monday and Tuesday, some districts in North Bengal may continue to receive scattered heavy rainfall. However, rainfall activity is expected to reduce slightly from Wednesday onward.
