Days after the Supreme Court allowed green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR, the Kolkata Police has issued a notification permitting the use of authorised green crackers for a restricted period during Kali Puja and Chhath Puja celebrations.

According to the order signed by Manoj Kumar Verma, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, green firecrackers can be displayed or discharged on October 20, 2025, between 8 pm and 10 pm, and again on October 28, 2025, from 6 am to 8 am.

‘Only authorised green firecrackers allowed’

The notification, dated October 16, 2025, was issued in line with directives from the Supreme Court of India, the Calcutta High Court, and the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB).

“In compliance with the order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta… authorised green firecrackers can be displayed or discharged during the ensuing Kalipuja & Deepawali festivals on 20.10.2025 from 8 p.m. till 10 p.m. only,” the notification read.

Verma added that anyone found violating the order will face action under existing laws. “Any person contravening this order shall be prosecuted as per existing law,” the circular stated.

Officers told to ensure strict compliance

The Kolkata Police has directed all officers-in-charge of police stations under its jurisdiction to stay vigilant and ensure that the court and WBPCB orders are fully implemented.

The circular also mentioned that copies of the order will be displayed on notice boards across Divisional Deputy Commissioners’ offices, police stations and Kolkata Municipal Corporation offices for public awareness.

This comes at a time when several states are tightening firecracker regulations ahead of Diwali to balance festive the spirit with pollution control. Kolkata’s move mirrors Delhi’s green firecrackers with limited hours and strict oversight.
