Daily commuters on Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line faced major delays on Wednesday after a crack was detected near MG Road station, forcing authorities to suspend services on a key stretch.
As per Metro officials, the glitch was reported around 12:45 pm, after a train halted for an extended period at Maidan station when it failed to receive a signal clearance. Passengers inside were left stranded for several minutes before an announcement informed them that services had been suspended.
“The train later moved up to Chandni Chowk station, where commuters were asked to deboard,” an official said, confirming that services between Maidan and Dumdum remain cancelled until further notice.
Commuter chaos, partial services resume
The sudden disruption left hundreds of passengers scrambling for alternate transport during the busy midday hours. Eyewitnesses said confusion prevailed on platforms as announcements of suspension came minutes apart.
In a notification on its ‘Amar Metro Kolkata’ mobile app, Metro Railway stated, “Due to unavoidable circumstances, truncated services in Blue Line are presently available between Maidan to Sahid Khudiram Station and Dumdum to Dakshineswar station. Inconvenience is deeply regretted.”
Officials said engineers were rushed to the spot for inspection and maintenance work after a crack was noticed on the track near MG Road. Teams are assessing the damage to determine when full services can be restored.
The Blue Line, connecting Dakshineswar in the north to Kavi Subhash in the south, is the city’s busiest Metro corridor and even a short suspension is enough to trigger delays across the network.
As of evening, repair work was underway, and Metro officials urged commuters to check updates on the app before travelling.
