Metro Railway will begin long-pending repair work at Kavi Subhash (New Garia) station on the Blue Line soon after Chhath Puja, Metro GM Subhransu Sekhar Mishra said on Friday. The southern terminal has remained out of service since July after cracks were found on platform pillars.
Before repairs start, engineers will install a rake-reversal point at Shahid Khudiram (Briji) to keep services running in the corridor. The reversal work is expected to take two to three days, likely on a weekend, and will require a traffic block, Mishra told reporters.
Metro sources said that once the work begins, services between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Shahid Khudiram may be suspended for a day, with trains running only between Dakshineswar and Tollygunge during the block.
What is the priority now?
Commercial services at New Garia have been shut since July 28, with trains terminating at Shahid Khudiram from the next day. However, the station lacks full terminal-level infrastructure, and the missing reversal point has slowed rake movement, causing delays and massive crowds across the Blue Line. The damaged platform for Dakshineswar-bound trains will now be demolished and rebuilt, officials said.
Metro Railway marked its 41st Foundation Day on Friday at Esplanade station, where Subhransu Sekhar Mishra also shared updates on future corridors. He confirmed that 57km of new Metro links have been sanctioned by the Railway Board, with work in progress on 29km at present.
If timelines permit, the entire Orange Line is expected to be ready by December 2026, while the Purple Line is targeted to reach Esplanade by 2029 and the Yellow Line to connect Michael Nagar by the same year.
The Blue Line repairs are now the top priority, as stated by the officials, as the new reversal point is expected to ease turnaround time and restore punctuality once the Kavi Subhash platform work gets underway.
