Traffic law violations increase in Kolkata, two-wheelers responsible in most cases

After 2019, the largest number of traffic signal violations happened in the year 2024.

Kolkata Police recently published a report on the number of traffic law violations that occurred in Kolkata over the past few years and what measures were taken regarding them. It shows that the highest number of signal violations occurred in 2024 after 2019. As a result, the number of cases filed by Kolkata Police has also increased. Forty per cent of such traffic violations are caused by two-wheelers.

According to Kolkata Traffic Police data, 3 lakh 9 thousand 1 cases were filed for signal violations in 2021. In 2023, that number increased to 3 lakh 35 thousand 176. In 2024, this number was 5 lakh 85 thousand 225.

Besides signal violations, the number of cases has also increased for reckless bike riding and riding without helmets. In 2024, cases were filed against 50 thousand 159 bikers for reckless driving. In 2022, this number was 46 thousand 41 and in 2023, this number was also 46 thousand 41.

Similarly, in 2021, cases were filed against 4 lakh 1 thousand 127 people for riding bikes without helmets. In 2022 and 2023, these numbers were 4 lakh 29 thousand 936 and 4 lakh 76 thousand 514, respectively. There, the tendency to ride bikes without helmets increased in 2024. The number of cases filed for this reason last year was 5 lakh 7 thousand 527. A Kolkata Police official says there is a strong possibility that the 2025 numbers will surpass the previous year's figures.

The Kolkata Police report mentions that in areas where the tendency to ride bikes following rules is higher, the number of accidents is much lower. This includes vast parts of South Kolkata. Jadavpur, S C Mallick Road, Bagha Jatin, Bypass have emerged as safe areas. But in Diamond Harbour Road between Taratala and Mominpur, Tiljala, port areas, bike-related traffic violations are higher, and the number of serious accidents is also significantly higher. In most cases, the extent of damage in accidents has increased due to not wearing helmets.
