Two criminals involved in the robbery and murder at a gold shop in Baranagar remain at large. One of them is Prince Das, the brother of notorious Bihar criminal Rakesh Das, who is imprisoned in Presidency Jail. Police have learned that Rakesh had brought two criminals, Chandan Mondal and Prince Kumar, from Jharkhand through him. After that, they joined Sanjay Maiti, the main conspirator of the incident, and carried out a robbery and murder.
According to police sources, Prince, Rakesh's elder brother, had planned the entire operation in collaboration with Sanjay, following Rakesh's instructions. They had chalked out everything – Who would enter the shop first? Who would enter next? Who would tie up the shopkeeper? Who would loot the gold? and which route they would use to escape and gather at one place to divide the gold before fleeing.
Accordingly, they raided the gold shop on Shambhunath Das Lane in Baranagar last Saturday and carried out the robbery and murder.
Police investigation has revealed that at some point, Rakesh and his brother Big Prince used to live as tenants around Chandan and Prince in Jharkhand. That's how they got acquainted. Using this relationship, jailed Rakesh employed Big Prince in the robbery. Police have learned that even though Rakesh was in jail, the control of his criminal empire was in Big Prince's hands. That's why, following Rakesh's instructions, he alone took away the major portion of the gold looted last Saturday. As a result, police are now desperately searching for Big Prince, a resident of Bihar.
According to police sources, about four kilograms of gold have been recovered from the already arrested Sanjay Maiti, Surajit Sikdar, Panchu Samanta, Chandan Mondal, and Prince Kumar. However, this is minimal compared to the approximately 15 kilograms of gold that were looted. Police believe that if the Big Prince can be arrested, they will get information about the remaining gold. Accordingly, a special team of Barrackpore police has gone to Bihar.
On the other hand, since jailed Rakesh Das is one of the key conspirators in the robbery and murder case, police have started planning to take him into custody. It has also been learned that police applied to the Barrackpore court on Thursday seeking to interrogate him inside the jail.
Barrackpore Police Commissioner Murlidhar Sharma said, “We have applied to the court seeking to interrogate jailed Rakesh to verify the information we have obtained by interrogating those arrested. The search for the remaining two criminals is ongoing”. At the same time, police are also verifying the claim made by the family of deceased Shankar Nagen Jana (63) that approximately 15 kilograms of gold was looted after the incident.
