Kolkata Police conducted a citywide drive on Wednesday night following Diwali celebrations, arresting 153 people for breaking the law. Of these, 146 were detained for disorderly conduct, while seven others were caught bursting banned firecrackers, an officer said on Thursday, according to a PTI report.
Despite repeated awareness campaigns and warnings, several people reportedly ignored restrictions on high-decibel fireworks. The police also seized 16.95 kilograms of prohibited firecrackers and 14.4 litres of illicit liquor during their operations across multiple city areas.
However, no arrests were made under gambling-related offences, an officer said, adding that police also initiated 383 traffic prosecutions during the day, according to a report by PTI.
Officials said that special patrols were deployed to monitor residential neighbourhoods and marketplaces to ensure compliance with court-mandated guidelines on fireworks.
Traffic offences and liquor seizures add to police action
Alongside arrests for public disturbances, Kolkata Police also booked 383 people for traffic violations on the same day. These included 85 cases of riders without helmets, 37 for pillion riders without helmets, 73 for rash driving, and 64 for drunken driving. Another 124 cases were registered under other categories.
The post-Diwali crackdown was part of an ongoing effort to ensure public safety and reduce air and noise pollution during the festive season.
