On the day before Kali Puja, the bloodied body of five-year-old Pratyusha Karmakar was found, sparking intense mystery in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. The child’s grandfather, Pronab Bhattacharya, is now arrested in connection with her death. Locals claim Pronab has two daughters. His elder daughter had died under unusual circumstances about ten years ago. Since then, he and his wife stayed mostly with his younger daughter, Pratyusha’s mother.
However, neighbourhood gossip suggests he is not fond of granddaughters. Naturally, questions arise- did all his anger fall on Pratyusha because she was his younger daughter’s daughter? The police are investigating.
Pratyusha’s parents both work in private companies and had gone to office on Sunday, as usual. At home, the child was under the care of her grandfather, grandmother, and a caretaker. In the evening, neighbors suddenly heard Pratyusha’s cries. Upon rushing in, they found her lying bloodied on the floor with multiple injury marks. They immediately took her to Sonarpur Rural Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police arrived at the scene after being informed and began questioning neighbors. According to residents, Pronab had wanted his younger daughter to have a grandson. His elder daughter had died almost ten years ago, and he was reportedly unhappy with having a granddaughter from his younger daughter.
Questions arise now-Did grandfather Pronab physically harm Pratyusha? And if there were two other adults at home, why did no one come forward to help the child? The police are investigating all angles of the case.
