The Detective Department of Kolkata Police raided a house on Chandra Nath Roy Road in Tiljala late on Monday night and busted a fake call centre that had been duping citizens of the United States. Seven people were arrested from the spot.

According to statement, the arrests were made after credible information was received about the group’s activities. The accused were running the racket by posing as representatives of a reputed antivirus company. They allegedly made internet calls to citizens of the United States, claiming their systems were compromised, and then persuaded them to pay hefty sums for fake technical support.
During the raid, officers seized nine mobile phones with SIM cards, three laptops, a router, and several documents suspected to contain evidence of the fraud. All electronic items have been sent for forensic examination.

Cybercrime trail widens
Preliminary investigations suggest the racket may be linked to similar cyber fraud networks operating from other parts of the city. Police believe the group collected personal data from the internet to target foreign victims and used VoIP to mask their location.
This is the latest in a series of crackdowns on illegal call centres in Kolkata, which has recently emerged as a hotspot for international cyber scams. The accused are being questioned to identify others involved in the network and trace the flow of money from their operations.
