Kolkata police arrested a man for allegedly molesting a 15-year-old patient inside a toilet at SSKM Hospital, one of the city’s premier government medical institutions.
The accused, identified as Amit Mallick, works as a ward boy at NRS Medical College and Hospital and was allegedly involved with a tout network operating around SSKM. Police said Mallick posed as a doctor and took the minor patient to the trauma care unit, where the assault reportedly took place.
According to police sources, the Bhowanipore police station made the arrest late on Wednesday night from the Dhapa area following a complaint filed by hospital authorities. “The victim’s statement has been recorded. Based on her deposition, a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered,” a senior police officer confirmed.
Complaint triggered by doctor’s alert
Hospital sources said the incident occurred three days ago but came to light only after a senior resident doctor in the gynaecology department alerted authorities on Wednesday. The internal complaint was forwarded to the police outpost, following which an investigation began.
Police arrested Mallick around 9:40 pm on October 22. He is scheduled to be produced before the Alipore court on Thursday.
The case has reignited concerns over security in Kolkata’s government hospitals. Recent incidents at RG Kar, Uluberia, and Birbhum’s Mohammedbazar hospitals, including assaults on doctors and nurses that have already raised serious safety questions.
“How could a minor patient be taken into a toilet by a male staff without anyone noticing?” asked another hospital staff, reflecting growing public anger.
