A day before Kali Puja, panic spread in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas, after the bloodied body of a five-year-old girl was found. On Sunday evening, the unconscious body of the child, identified as Pratyusha Karmakar, was recovered from her home.
Local residents said they heard Pratyusha screaming in the evening out of nowhere. Rushing into the house, they found the child lying on the blood-soaked floor. She was immediately taken to Sonarpur Rural Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Both of Pratyusha’s parents work at private companies in Kolkata. As usual, they were at work on Sunday. The child stayed with her grandparents, and a woman caretaker had been hired to look after her.
Locals claimed that there were multiple injury marks on the child’s body. Questions have arisen as to how such an incident occurred despite three adults being present in the house.
The child’s body has been sent for post-mortem. Police have begun questioning the caretaker, as well as the child’s grandparents. The house has been sealed. Investigators said that several answers will become clearer once the autopsy report is available.
So far, no formal complaint has been lodged by the family. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and started an investigation.
