Late at night, a four-year-old girl was abducted from her grandmother's care in Tarakeswar late at night and sexually assaulted. The incident that took place on Friday caused an uproar across the state. The girl’s family said that she was found bloodied in a drain near Tarakeswar railway station on Friday afternoon. Following this, the Tarakeswar police started an investigation. During the inquiry, incoherent statements of the girl’s grandfather raised suspicion among investigators. He was detained on Saturday and interrogated. On Sunday, the police arrested him formally.

The girl was reported to be sleeping under a mosquito net in a temporary shed with her grandmother in the area near Tarakeswar station. Earlier, the family had claimed that unidentified assailants cut open the mosquito net to abduct her. After an extensive search, the child was rescued from a drain close to Tarakeswar station and taken to Tarakeswar Rural Hospital for treatment.
The BJP Arambagh district co-vice president, Ganesh Chakraborty, accused the police of inaction, though Tarakeswar's Trinamool MLA Ramendu Singh Roy dismissed these claims. A special five-member investigation team has been formed by the police for the case, with a forensic unit collecting samples from the scene. The child is undergoing medical treatment and will be sent to a protective home as the investigation goes on.

Since the incident happened within the area under railway administration, Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kamnashis Sen said a request would be made to the railway authorities for increasing the security in the area.
