Woman of ‘Gujrati Gang’ held for Rs 9 lakh bus theft in Kolkata, full cash recovered

A 30-year-old woman from Gujarat, identified as part of the notorious ‘Gujrati Gang,’ has been arrested by Kolkata Police’s Watch Section for allegedly stealing over ₹9 lakh from a commuter’s backpack on a busy city bus. All the stolen cash has been recovered.

Kolkata Police’s Watch Section has arrested a woman linked to the infamous ‘Gujrati Gang’ for allegedly stealing ₹9.05 lakh from a passenger on a city bus. The accused, Radha Mali (30), was apprehended from Rishra in Hooghly on October 27, 2025, just two days after the theft.

The police report obtained by the Ei Samay Digital noted that the incident took place on October 25, between 5:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., when Kanai Jaiswal, an employee of a local businessman, was travelling on bus route L-238 from Howrah Bus Stand to Chaltabagan, Amherst Street. During the bus journey, an unidentified person allegedly lifted ₹9,05,200 in cash from his backpack.

“During investigation of the case, CCTV footage of the PO (place of occurrence) and adjacent area was collected and shown to sources,” the report noted.

Police expose tactics after arresting gang member Radha Mali

Notably, acting on a credible tip-off, officers from the Watch Section, along with lady police personnel, traced and arrested Radha Mali, who hails from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and had been residing in Laxmi Pally, Rishra.

She was “closely interrogated and pursuant to her statement, the entire stolen cash ₹9,05,200 was recovered and seized from her being the subject matter of the case maintaining all formalities,” officials confirmed.

Investigators revealed that Radha is a member of an “infamous Gujrati Gang.”

“While committing theft, they used to get physically so close to the victim to divert attention,” the report added.

Police believe the gang often targets crowded buses and markets, relying on distraction and quick movements to lift valuables.
