A 22-year-old boy saw a man jumping from the bridge into Mirik Lake at night. Although he did not know how to swim, he could not sit with his hands and legs folded after seeing this scene. The stranger jumped into the lake to save the man. The man who tried to commit suicide survived, but the young man named Sahil Roy died. He is a resident of Thurbo LD Bahadur village in Mirik. The incident has cast a shadow of grief in the area.
According to the police, Sadeep Darji, a resident of the Mirik Bazar area, jumped from the Indira Bridge over Mirik Lake around 11 pm on Monday. Sahil was at the spot at the time. The young man could not remain calm when he saw the man sink in front of his eyes. He also jumped into the water. Locals saw the scene and helped in the rescue operation. Shortly after the incident, Sadip, who tried to commit suicide, was rescued, but Sahil drowned in the lake. Others present at the scene informed the police. Steps were taken to rescue Sahil. But even after an overnight search, he could not be found.
The body of the young man was recovered around 8 am on Tuesday, October 21. The doctor declared him dead. The incident has cast a shadow of grief in Sahil's village. Sameer Roy, the sarpanch of his village, said, "Sahil was a very good man. He was always willing to help others. He was loved by all for his philanthropic nature."
His body has been sent for autopsy. On the other hand, police said that Sadip was rescued and sent to BPSEC Hospital in Mirik. It is initially known that he tried to commit suicide due to family problems.
