A portion of the bus stand roof collapsed near Howrah station. The incident took place around Sunday noon. There were no major accidents, as there were fewer passengers at the stand during the holidays. Upon getting the information, police from Golabari police station rushed to the spot.
Numerous buses ply from the private bus stand adjoining to Howrah station every day. A portion of the roof of the stand collapsed around noon on Sunday, leaving a hole about two feet deep. Panic spread as a large chunk of the roof collapsed.
A vendor next to the stand said, "Suddenly, I heard a loud noise. When I ran to the road, I saw a large pile of concrete lying on the road. Iron rods have come out of a large part of the roof. If the passengers were standing there, there would have been a major accident. "
Pankaj Bhattacharya works in a shop in front of the stand. He said, "The roof has not been repaired for a long time. Sometimes big chunks fall off. A month ago, Faruk Sheikh, a conductor, was seriously injured when he was hit on the head. Occasionally, people come from the administration, but no maintenance has been done. "
Police from the Golabari police station went to the spot. The news also reached Sujoy Chakraborty, chairman of the Howrah Municipal Corporation's Board of Governors. "The KMDA is responsible for the maintenance of the bus stand. A letter will be written to KMDA and the police in this regard. So the roof of the bus stand is rebuilt."
