This year, despite record rainfall and persistent waterlogging, vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria were largely under control. However, Leptospirosis, a disease spread through stagnant dirty water from rainfall, has emerged as a new cause for concern. Doctors have reported that leptospirosis is transmitted through leptospira bacteria or from rodents such as rats, shrews, and mongoose-like animals.
In the current weather conditions and environment, with water accumulated from continuous rainfall, the feces and urine of animals like rats, shrews, and mongoose are mixing with the water. Doctors' preliminary assessment is that the outbreak of this disease has emerged from such water.
Already, two people have been infected with this disease and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Srirampur. One of them is a woman. According to doctors, this disease was not seen before. This year, it has rained for more than two months continuously. The accumulated water has become contaminated, leading to this disease taking hold. Leptospira bacteria typically damage the kidneys and liver rapidly. In such circumstances, it is very urgent to be admitted to the hospital and start treatment quickly.
