A young woman, resident of Chandannagar had jumped into the Ganges two days ago. Her body was recovered on Thursday at the Ganga ghat in Serampore. The young woman worked at a jewellery shop in Chandannagar. Allegations had emerged that the shop owner's wife mentally harassed her in various ways. The young woman left a note. Based on that, police have arrested the accused.
The deceased young woman's name is Monami Ghosh, aged 25 years. Monami, a resident of Boubazar in Chandannagar, worked at a jewellery shop in the Bagbazar area of the same city. She jumped into the Ganges around 12 noon last Tuesday. She had sat for some time at Chandannagar Strand. Then she wrote a letter, placed it under her mobile phone and jumped into the Ganges. Not knowing how to swim, she drowned immediately after jumping into the Ganges. Upon receiving news of her drowning in the Ganges, the disaster management force deployed divers and speed boats. Search operations began. 2 days later, on Thursday, the young woman's body was recovered at the Ganges ghat in Srirampur. The body was stuck in water hyacinths along the riverbank.
Police have said that a post-mortem of the body will be conducted at Srirampur Wales Hospital. Police have started investigation after filing a case at Chandannagar police station. Mamata Das, wife of the owner of the jewellery shop where Monami worked, has been arrested. Police are interrogating her at the police station.
According to the deceased young woman's family, Monami had a registered marriage with Satyajit Ray, a resident of Shitalatala in Boubazar, Chandannagar. The social wedding was supposed to take place in February next year. All preparations for the wedding were also underway. The family said that everything including wedding hall rental, catering, and shopping had been completed. Such a tragic incident occurred in the midst of all this.
