Chhath Puja 2025: DVC to regulate water release for devotees’ safety at riverbanks

Ahead of Chhath Puja, DVC issues new guidelines to control water release from Maithon and Panchet dams to ensure devotees’ safety.

The Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee (DVRRC) has issued new guidelines regarding the water release from Maithon and Panchet dams, keeping in mind the devotees during Chhath Puja and based on a written request from Nituriya police. Member Secretary Sanjib Kumar informed on Sunday evening that the directive issued around 5 PM instructed DVC to release 200 cusecs from Maithon and 500 cusecs from Panchet from the morning of October 26 to the morning of October 27.

To ensure that devotees visiting riverbanks for Chhath Puja face no inconvenience, no water will be released from these two reservoirs between 6 AM on October 27 to 2 PM on October 28. After that, the regular release of 1,500 cusecs daily for drinking water and industrial use in the Asansol industrial area will resume.

Meanwhile, Asansol Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Biswajit Bhattacharya inspected multiple Chhath ghats in Kulti today. He was accompanied by Asansol Municipality Deputy Mayor Wasimul Haque, Mayor in Council Gurudas Chattopadhyay alias Rocket, and the Inspector in Charge of Kulti police station.

They visited Dishergarh, Barakar, Babaji and Nalipara ghats. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate said, "The Chhath ghats are ready with all infrastructure. Security has also been ensured by the police. The administration will maintain strict vigilance everywhere to ensure this festival is completed without any hindrance."
