West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday visited BJP MP Khagen Murmu (Malda Uttar) at a private hospital in Siliguri, after being assaulted during a visit to flood and landslide-affected areas in Nagarkata, North Bengal.
Aaj Tak visuals showed Bengal CM entering the hospital to check on Murmu’s condition. Several TMC sources noted the chief minister interacted with the doctors and medical staff treating the injured MP and assured Murmu of full assistance from the state government.
Speaking to reporters after her visit, Banerjee said, “I have received all inputs. He has high blood sugar. It needs to be controlled. I also wished him well and a speedy recovery.”
Murmu was attacked on Monday while visiting flood-affected area
Murmu was reportedly attacked on Monday by a group of unidentified miscreants while interacting with locals in one of the worst-hit flood zones. BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh was also injured during the incident.
The BJP has accused Trinamool supporters of the assault, while the TMC dismissed the charge, alleging that BJP leaders were using the deluge as a cheap opportunity to spread their political narrative.
Videos circulating on social media showed Murmu’s car with a shattered windshield and the MP himself bleeding from the nose. MLA Sankar Ghosh appeared with torn clothes and minor injuries.
Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari expressed, “Mamata Banerjee has realized (quite late) that the people of West Bengal have despised her inhuman act of dancing at a carnival with celebrities while North Bengal was reeling under floods. In contrast, BJP MLAs and MPs were on the ground helping the affected people. So, she has now pressed the panic button and has now unleashed her goons belonging to the 'Special Community' and incited them to attack the BJP MPs and MLAs so that they can be refrained from engaging in relief work.”
Meanwhile, due to the heavy rainfall over the last 48 hours, there has been excessive flooding in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts. Such places as the Nagrakata in the Dooars and Mirik in Darjeeling have not been exceptionally spared. At least 24 individuals have been killed.
